Russia hotel invitation letter
Some hotels in Russia are entitled to issue visa support for their guests, and will do so once a booking is paid. It is a legitimate route, but it ties your visa file to one property and usually costs more flexibility than a tour operator voucher.
Section 1When a hotel can issue visa support
A hotel may issue an invitation only if it holds the registration that entitles it to do so. Large city hotels often qualify; small hotels, hostels and apartment rentals generally do not, and an online booking platform never does.
Ask the property directly whether it issues visa support, and whether it does so before full payment. Reception staff frequently confuse a booking confirmation with visa support, so ask for the reference number the document will carry.
Section 2Hotel invitation compared with an operator voucher
A hotel invitation binds the visa file to that hotel and usually to a prepaid, non-refundable stay. An operator voucher names accommodation as a formality and lets you change where you sleep without touching the visa file.

Section 3When the hotel route makes sense
Choose the hotel route when you are staying in one property for the whole trip, the booking is fixed, and the hotel confirms in writing that it issues support. Otherwise the operator voucher is the more forgiving document.
- Single-city trip with a confirmed, paid reservation
- Corporate travel where the company books the hotel anyway
- The hotel has issued support for guests before and states the fee upfront

An invitation letter is a supporting document. It does not guarantee a visa: consular officers decide every application.
Questions
Is a hotel booking the same as a hotel invitation letter?
No. A reservation confirms a room; visa support is a separate document with a registry reference. Most bookings, especially from online platforms, are not visa support.
Can a hostel or apartment host issue an invitation?
Usually not. Registration for issuing visa support is limited, and short-term rentals almost never hold it.
Does the hotel invitation force me to stay there?
In practice it ties the file to that property. Changing your stay after the visa is issued is a matter between you and the hotel, but the file was built on that booking.
Which is cheaper?
A standalone operator voucher is normally cheaper than the premium a hotel charges, and it does not require prepaying the room.
