Guidance note 05
Private invitation to Russia
A private invitation is used to visit friends or relatives. Unlike a tourist voucher, it cannot be bought or written: the host applies in person at the migration office in Russia and receives an official form, which then travels to you.
Section 1How a private invitation is created
Your host applies at the local migration office with their passport, proof of housing and your passport details. The authority checks the application and issues an official invitation form, which the host sends to you for the consular appointment.
This is the slowest of the common routes. Processing is measured in weeks, and the timeline depends on a local office rather than on any service you can pay to accelerate.
Section 2Private invitation compared with a tourist invitation
For a short holiday where you happen to stay with friends, the tourist route is usually faster and simpler. The private route matters when the visit itself is family-based, when it is long, or when a consulate expects it given your circumstances.
Staying at a friend's flat on a tourist visa is normal and lawful. The invitation type does not dictate whose sofa you sleep on; it dictates who formally invited you.
| Private invitation | Tourist invitation | |
|---|---|---|
| Who issues it | Migration office, on your host's application | Registered tour operator |
| Time to obtain | Weeks | Minutes to hours |
| Host obligations | Host is formally responsible | None for your friends |
| Suits | Family visits, long stays | Holidays, short trips |
| Can you stay with friends anyway? | Yes | Yes |
Section 3Registration once you arrive
Whoever invited you, someone must register your stay after arrival. Hotels do this automatically. In private accommodation the responsibility falls on your host, within the deadline set by law for your nationality.
Keep the tear-off part of the registration slip with your passport. It is the document checked if your stay is ever questioned, and its absence, not the invitation, is what causes problems on departure.
Important
An invitation letter is a supporting document. It does not guarantee a visa: consular officers decide every application.
Questions
Can my friend just write me a letter?
No. A private invitation is an official form issued by the migration office after your host applies. A personal letter carries no weight at the consulate.
Is a private visa longer than a tourist visa?
It can allow a longer stay, which is one reason families use it despite the slower process.
Can I visit friends on a tourist visa instead?
Yes, and most short visits are done this way. The tourist invitation is faster and places no formal obligation on your friends.
Who registers my stay if I sleep at a friend's home?
Your host submits the notification. If you move to a hotel mid-trip, the hotel handles its own portion of the stay.
