Do you need an invitation to visit Russia?
Whether you need an invitation depends on one question: can your passport use the unified electronic visa for this particular trip? If it can, no invitation is involved. If it cannot, or the trip does not fit the e-visa limits, the invitation is mandatory.
Section 1The short answer for your passport
Around 64 nationalities may apply for the unified e-visa and need no invitation for a short single-entry trip. Everyone else, and anyone whose trip exceeds the e-visa limits, applies at a consulate and must attach visa support.
The e-visa list is set by government decision and has changed several times. Confirm your nationality on the official portal on the day you apply rather than trusting a list copied from a blog, including this one.

Section 2When e-visa nationals still order an invitation
Eligibility does not always mean suitability. The e-visa is single entry, capped at a short stay, valid only for a limited window and usable only at listed border crossings. Any trip that breaks one of those four limits goes back to the consular route with an invitation.
- You want to leave for a neighbouring country and return on the same trip
- You need longer in the country than the e-visa allows
- Your entry point is not on the list of e-visa checkpoints
- You are travelling for work, long-term study or journalism
- You want the predictability of a sticker visa in the passport
Section 3Nationalities that cannot use the e-visa
United States, United Kingdom, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passport holders are not on the e-visa list. For them the invitation is not an optional convenience; it is the first document of the only available route, and it should be arranged before flights are booked.
Residence does not change this. A British citizen living in the United Arab Emirates still needs an invitation, even though Emirati passport holders can use the e-visa. Eligibility follows the passport; the consulate you attend follows your residence.
Section 4Where people get this wrong
The frequent error is ordering an invitation and then applying for an e-visa anyway, or the reverse. The two routes are separate files with separate dates, and money spent on the wrong one is not recoverable.

Important
An invitation letter is a supporting document. It does not guarantee a visa: consular officers decide every application.
Questions
Do British citizens need an invitation for Russia?
Yes. The United Kingdom is not on the unified e-visa list, so a consular visa with visa support is the only route. This applies to holidays as well as business trips.
Do US citizens need an invitation?
Yes. American passports are outside the e-visa scheme, and tourist visas for US nationals are issued on the consular route with an invitation attached.
Do Indian citizens need an invitation?
Not for a short single-entry trip, because India is on the e-visa list. An invitation is needed for longer stays, second entries and business categories.
Does a residence permit in an e-visa country help?
No. E-visa eligibility is decided by the passport you hold, not by where you live.
Is an invitation needed for a transit stop?
If you stay airside and do not pass immigration, usually no visa at all is required. Leaving the airport changes that and brings the normal rules back.
