Guidance note 09
Russia invitation letter cost
There are two separate payments in this process, and confusing them is common. You pay a fee for the invitation to the organisation that issues it, and later a consular fee to the mission that decides the visa. Neither refunds the other.
Section 1What you pay, and to whom
The invitation fee covers issuing the host document. The consular fee covers processing the visa application and is set by the mission for your nationality. A visa centre may add its own service charge on top.
| Payment | Paid to | Refundable if the visa is refused? |
|---|---|---|
| Invitation fee | The issuing organisation | No, the document was produced |
| Consular fee | The consulate or embassy | Normally not |
| Visa centre service fee | The centre, where one is used | No |
| Courier or translation | Third parties, if you use them | No |
Section 2Why business invitations cost more
A tourist voucher is produced by one registered operator against your passport data. A business invitation involves a Russian company and often a state authority, which is why it takes longer and is priced accordingly.
| Invitation | Effort behind it | Relative cost |
|---|---|---|
| Tourist, single entry | Operator issues against passport data | Lowest |
| Tourist, double entry | Same, with a second entry recorded | Slightly higher |
| Business, short | Russian company issues on letterhead | Higher |
| Business, long multiple entry | Company plus authority approval | Highest |
Section 3Why a free invitation letter is a false economy
Templates offered free online carry no registry number and no issuer that a consulate can trace. Filing one wastes the appointment and puts a refusal on your record, which is a far larger cost than the document fee.
The same applies to letters bought through anonymous chat accounts. If nobody can be named as the issuer, the paper has no standing at the counter.
Section 4Budgeting the whole trip
Plan for the invitation, the consular fee, insurance, photographs and travel to the appointment. The invitation is usually the smallest of these, which is why choosing it on price alone rarely pays off.
- Invitation fee, per traveller, per document
- Consular fee, set by nationality and urgency
- Travel medical insurance for the whole stay
- Photographs to the required specification
- Travel and time for an in-person appointment
Important
An invitation letter is a supporting document. It does not guarantee a visa: consular officers decide every application.
Questions
How much does a Russia invitation letter cost?
Tourist invitations are the cheapest category and are priced per traveller. Business invitations cost more and vary with the length of visa. We confirm the exact figure in writing when we answer your enquiry.
Is the consular fee included?
No. The consulate charges its own fee for the visa, separately from the invitation.
Do children pay for an invitation?
Each traveller needs their own document, so each carries a fee, regardless of age.
Can I get a Russia invitation letter free?
Not from a registered issuer. Free templates circulating online are not visa support and are a frequent cause of refusal.
Do I get a refund if my visa is refused?
No. The fee pays for issuing the document, which happened. The consular decision is separate.
